Hyeok-gyu Kwon and Dong-seop Lee, student interns at Prof. Kangjae Lee’s lab in the Department of Location-Based Information System, College of Science and Technology, received the Excellence Award (Minister of Korea Forest Service Award) at the "23rd Digital Forest Utilization and Idea Contest" hosted by the Korea Forest Service on November 2, 2023.
The contest was organized to discover innovative forest management cases and ideas utilizing digital technology, big data, and remote sensing (satellites, drones, LiDAR, etc.), aiming to "realize advanced forest management through the digital transformation of forestry." Following two rounds of expert evaluations, the winners were selected, and the award ceremony took place during the "23rd Digital Forest Conference" on November 2, 2023.
The team, consisting of Hyeok-gyu Kwon and Dong-seop Lee, proposed an innovative idea for "Building a Forest Fire Prevention System through Digital Twinning of Combustion Times Between Tree Species for Transitioning to a Preventive Disaster Management System." They sought to enhance forest fire prevention and response capabilities by developing a combustion time model for various tree species using Digital Twin technology and machine learning.
"We are incredibly happy to have achieved such a great result in our first contest," the winning team remarked. "Our project demonstrated the potential of digital solutions for forest fire prevention and suggested a new direction for forest conservation. This experience allowed us to deeply understand the importance and potential of utilizing satellite information, and we are now motivated to further refine and perfect our winning idea. We are grateful to our teammates and those who provided us with this opportunity, and we will continue to strive for meaningful achievements in the future."
